You will be given a rash guard to wear over your swimsuit, and then you will spend 10 minutes taking a land lesson where Ty teaches you surfing fundamentals including paddling, duck diving and how to stand up on your board.
—
What do I need to bring with me when I arrive for my first lesson?
Just yourself and sunscreen. Make sure you apply it everywhere–especially to the back of your legs.
—
What is the age of your youngest student?
The oldest?
Ty takes out kids of all ages, and insurance requires that all children under 13 be on a private lesson. There is no age limit, either. If you want to surf, Ty will teach you.
—
What if I don’t know how to swim or if I’m not a strong swimmer? Can I still get surf lessons?
You do need to be able to swim to book a surf lesson. You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete, but you should be comfortable in the water.
—
How many lessons do I need at a minimum in order to get the hang of surfing?
Ty guarantees he can get all his students up on the first lesson but it can take a number of lessons to really surf well. Some people–especially those with skateboard or snowboard experience–might take to surfing faster, but even a couple of lessons can make a big difference.
—
What about weather conditions?
Waves vary any given day on the beach and sides of the islands, depending on wind and weather patterns. Ty checks the surf report first thing every morning and will make a decision on where the best spot is to teach a lesson. You can access the report via the main page at Ty’s website.
—
What happens if I book a lesson but the weather is bad for the day and we can’t go surfing? Can we do something else?
You can definitely plan an alternate activity and Ty, being local, knows how to enjoy Hawaii no matter the weather. Talk to Ty about visiting SeaLife Park, Bishop Museum, the aquarium, or exploring historic Honolulu.
